Electric Highway in India | E-highway along Delhi-Mumbai

The government of India is planning a trial for an electric highway between Delhi and Mumbai at the cost of about 2 billion in Indian currency. Initially, They will build a 10km pilot electric highway (e-highway) with overhead electric lines to power the engines of trucks and buses within the next three years. Government has already awarded 60% of the contract for that.

Nitin Gadkari, union minister for road transport and highway, revealed the plan in parliament. He said that It will be a 1,300 km, 12-lane green highway, and their target is to complete the project before January 26, 2024.

Route of Electric Highway in India ( E-highway )

This route will be separate from the regular side. The e-highway will pass through the economically backward areas of some states Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. For this, the centre will save about Rs 16000 Crore for land acquisition.

Infrastructure of E-highway

The infrastructure includes overhead cables and substation for the trail run. The electric cable will be there to draw power from the overhead cable network. There will be two tracks. Also, the trucks with containers can run at 100km/h. Trucks of 80t will be deployed.

Plans for the electric highway in India

The plan is the trucks can run on electricity over 20 km of distance and at that time electricity will charge the vehicle batteries. After this 20 km, the trucks will run on the power from batteries. After sometimes this can tap the overhead lines and the batteries get charged again simultaneously.

Previous tests on e-highway

The concept - Electric-highway is not new. Some countries already started the trial of this technology in their country. In 2017, Hesse, the German state, awarded a contract to Siemens to build an overhead contact line for electrified freight transport on a 10km stretch of motorway.

In the previous year, Scania, Swedish commercial vehicle maker announced that it would supply electric hybrid trucks for Germany for their Electric Highway (E-highway) research project.

Germany launched its first Electric Highway ( E-highway ) for testing the efficiencies in May this year. The E- the highway is on Autobahn-5 between Darmstadt and Frankfurt and it will last until 2022.
