India planned to reach the nuclear capacity 63GW by 2032. However, nuclear disasters lead to several protests, mass rally, and refusal of permission from the State Government. One of them is the Haripur Nuclear Power plant in West Bengal. As the government of West Bengal refuses to permit the plant's construction. Public Interest Litigation(PIL) was filed at the Supreme Court against the government’s nuclear programs.
Nuclear Power plan in West Bengal
Haripur Nuclear Power plant was the only plant proposal to built-in West Bengal. Haripur is a village located between junput and soula. In 2010, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit signed a collaboration with the Russian Government. On setting 5 nuclear plants in India, including one in Haripur. Centre Government gave environmental clearance for the project. The land was allotted to the Russian Company, Rosatom to develop the nuclear park.
Later, the land farmers and fishermen, supported by NGO’s launched a protest against the project. As they feared the loss of livelihood around the radius of the plant. Later, forcing the State Government of West Bengal to reject the Centre’s proposal of the Nuclear Power plants.
Haripur Nuclear Power Plant
Haripur was supposed to have six nuclear reactors, each 1650 MW. A total installed capacity of 10,000 MW of electricity. Location: Coastal area of Contai, East Midnapur district.
The nuclear power corporation of India(NCPIL) renegotiated the Haripur Nuclear Power plant with the ruling government. The government did not allow nuclear power plant anywhere in the state of West Bengal.
A survey titled, “Coastal Avian Diversity Survey West Bengal” was released for the pre-project bird study and other biodiversity factors. The report claimed that 34 species of birds were found in Haripur belt and many other diversities.
